Research

1. Production of a new aluminum compounds to prevent eutrophication, and demonstration experiments at the Lake Biwa - Yodo River Water Quality Purification Joint Experiment Center.
2. Disease occurrence situation, lifestyle surveys, factor analysis and pharmaceutical/economic research on prescription drugs in developing countries.
3. Research relating to the removal of toxic heavy metals, endocrine disrupters (estrogen and its metabolites) and mutagens in the water environment.

Introduction

In order to realize new applications, in the environmental field, of aluminum compounds used in antacids and other products, we have collaborated with private companies to develop a new aluminum compound recovery agent which is low cost, and has high recovery efficiency. In April 2007, we began field experiments at the Lake Biwa - Yodo River Water Quality Purification Joint Experiment Center, and we started surveys of variation over time in Lake Biwa of substances such as heavy metals, endocrine disrupters and mutagens, and recovery experiments for nutrient salts.
From the perspective of globalization, on the other hand, we are moving forward with joint research and student exchanges with Thailand -- the country of ASEAN with the highest level of economic development. In particular, the number of AIDS affected persons in Thailand has been reported to be a few tens of times greater than that in Japan, but Thailand has been more successful than anywhere else in the world in bringing AIDS under control. However, there are concerns about the economic impact of bearing the treatment costs of AIDS patients. At present, we are working jointly with the Faculty of Pharmacy of Chiang Mai University to conduct modeling to reduce medical costs at the Chiang Mai University Hospital (Faculty of Medicine). Furthermore, we are also surveying changes over time in substances such as heavy metals, endocrine disrupters and mutagens, with the aim of surveying and improving the water environment in Thailand.
