Introduction

An organizing process that tissues, organs or bodies are formed by a germ cell is wonderful. Our laboratory purposes elucidating the question why cells grow, die or develop tumor at the molecular level. For this purpose, we try to identify and clone the gene of target protein, and then analyze a state in the gene-transfected or -knockouted cells. In addition, we are preparing a monoclonal antibody to investigate the distribution of the target protein in cells or tissues. Recently, we can make monoclonal antibodies with gene-technology and, for use, application to a diagnosis or therapy of cancer is thought about. Now, we are analyzing CD98 which is a heterodimeric 125-kDa cell surface glycoprotein, which consists of an 85-kDa heavy chain (hc) and a 40-kDa light chain (lc). This study started from the findings that an antibody for CD98 inhibited the proliferation of tumor cells. Lc has several kinds of types and goes in and out of a plasma membrane many times and forms a transporter, and hc brings lc to cell surface and regulates an amino acid transport. Recently, we found that the interaction of hc with lc contributed to the development of cancer. Pharmaceutical research on humanized therapeutic antibodies to cancer is in progress. We want to have all of you realize biological pleasure by all means.
